King Changó LAMC Show at El Museo Del Barrio Blows the Roof Off the Rooftop!

King Chango en LAMC latin music alternative conference 2010

Fotografia por Enrique Castillo

LAMC hits the spot with a show on the rooftop of El Museo Del Barrio. A perfect summer breeze passes through the intimate crowd as Pacha Massive performs against a beautiful view of NYC skyscrapers. Pacha Massive's sultry female vocalist was hypnotizing and melodic. As her latin, jazz influenced voice flowed to the reggae, cumbia beats, I quickly felt like the roof was really an island and my coke was a mimosa. Dominican born, Nova, blends in his hip hop-reggae stylings for a smooth, funky ride that gets the crowd in a real sexy grooving mood.

King Chango proved that a 7 year hiatus is well worth the wait when this band’s performance proved to be a musical adrenaline rush of pure body rocking, booty bumping excitement! Vocalist, Venezuelan/American, Blanquito Man, was magnetic as his energy on stage pulled the audience in and didn't let them go until he was done with them. With each pelvic thrust pumping to the beat of his own drummer, Luis Jesus Ruiz, Blanquito wasn’t afraid to leave little to the imagination. Such a raw, naughty performance made me feel slightly embarrassed until I saw a grandmother of three, dirty dancing next to me. This was the true beauty of the scene King Chango had created at El Museo. King Chango's music had something to please everyone's taste. With songs like "Sin Ti", Blanquito's voice drives to your soul, filled with passion and sincerity. "Sin Ti" was even more powerful live. This band cleverly knows how to spread messages ranging from politics to love, through their infectious rhythms. One of my favorite tunes of the night, was about their appreciation for a special plant. Who knew King Chango were such nature lovers? Guitarist, Miguel Oldenburg, added a rock and roll flair with his bluesy electrical solos to which Blanquito Man went from dancing meringue to headbanging in a spilt second. With their funky horns section, you experience a fusion that is explosive. Ska is not dead because Latin Ska is just starting to erupt.

FabrikaLink: King Chango Sigue Siendo El Rey!

http://fabrikalink.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&catid=60:news&id=414:king-chango-sigue-siendo-el-rey&Itemid=118
Last Saturday, December 5th King Chango took center stage at the Miami Beach Bandshell to rightfully reclaim their spot as one of the best Latin ska bands.

Led by the incredibly talented and equally eclectic Blanquito Man, King Chango had the crowd jumping, screaming, and singing along to classics like “Sin Ti” and “Latin Ska.”It was obvious that the band missed being on stage and that their heart and soul was being poured into their performance. Their high, positive energy and big smiles was contagious. Before you knew it, the audience was jumping on stage with them to dance alongside and keep the vibe up.The band gave their fans everything they had, playing all their old hits, and introducing the new ones that will be featured on their upcoming 2010 album release. The tunes weren’t the only newbies that night, though. King Chango introduced its new members and special guests, Kamil Zelaa - from Venezuela – trumpet, Efrain Jurado Olivares - Salvadoreño NYC - keyboard #2, and Candice Cannabis a.k.a. Blonde Phantom - Special Guest - NYC – vocals. And let’s not forget Blanquito Man’s new look, sans-dreads!!The night ended with an encore set featuring the ever-popular “Imigrante” and a remix of “Sin Ti.”It was a great night, with great music, and a warm feeling that life is good…again. Welcome back, King Chango!!!

King Chango

By Arielle Castillo

In the mid-'90s, many considered the multimember New York City act King Chango to be part of the larger constellation of ska revival acts flourishing in the Big Apple. But the band's musical roots ran deeper than those of many of its peers. Yes, the "Chango" in its name is indeed a nod to the Yoruba god, and the band was also founded by the Venezuelan-born Andrew "Blanquito Man" Blanco. As such, King Chango brought a hard-charging sound to its brass section, with a larger section of the Caribbean and Latin America influencing its sonic brew. The Latin touch also helped the band escape much of the derision later lobbed at the more purist ska acts, and the Latin alternative scene gleefully embraced King Chango in its later years. Another way in which the band stood out was with its openly political lyrics. In recent years, for instance, the band has vocally supported the removal of U.S. troops from the Puerto Rican island of Vieques.

Though King Chango disbanded in 2003, Blanco announced earlier this year in a Blogspot post that the group was officially back together. Since then, it has appeared at a number of industry showcases, such as the Latin American Music Conference and CMJ, and has launched a few national tour dates. With a new (and coed!) lineup, the band delivers a sound that's even more boisterous and Latin, but it still touches on the influence of Jamaican beats. Fans should feel especially lucky about catching this show: Blanco was recently rushed to the hospital for emergency gallbladder surgery, forcing the cancellation of two shows in his native Venezuela. The band's performance at the North Beach Bandshell, though, should find him in high spirits and ready again to party for a revolution.

Blanquito's Emergency Surgery!

Blanquito Man was rushed to the hospital emergency room in NYC on October 23rd, 2009 in terrible pain and had an emergency operation. He underwent a Laparoscopic Surgery to remove his gallbladder which had become internally inflamed and infected. Fortunately, and thanks to the early clinical intervention, the surgery was a success! After two days of hospitalization followed by recuperating at home, he is recovering well and taking rest at the recommendaton of the surgeons for a successful post-operative recovery.

Unfortunately, two shows in Venezuela: Anfiteatro de Sambil, Caracas Nov 13, 2009, & Bahia Rasta Bar, Maracaibo Nov 14th, 2009, had to be postponed and rescheduled due to this medical emergency, but new show dates will be announced soon! Full ticket refund is available for those who bought tickets at place of purchase...

Thanks to all for your best wishes & blessings!

King Changó is back...and back to fighting for Vieques!

King Changó is back! Our band is now in rehearsals to begin performing live soon. We may have taken a break as a group. But we never stopped believing in our causes. One of these causes is the struggle to bring peace and justice to the people of Vieques, Puerto Rico.

King Changó is proud to have been involved in the movement to get the U.S. Navy out of Vieques. We were in Washington, DC in 1999 performing in front of the White House at pro-Vieques rallies. We played concerts in DC and NY to advocate for the Navy's exit for Vieques, and proudly displayed our "US Navy out of Vieques" stickers in our live shows (and on the inside of our CD, "The Return of El Santo"). We recorded the song "¡Al Rescate de Vieques!": http://www.viequeslibre.addr.com/mp3/Al%20Rescate%20de%20Vieques.mp3

While we celebrate the fact that the Navy finally left Vieques in May 2003, there is still widespread contamination and a health crisis on the island, as a result of over six decades of bombing with everything from napalm to depleted uranium.

Now that King Changó is back, we call on our friends to get involved in the cause for peace and justice for Vieques. Contact the White House and your Members of Congress. Ask them to provide for the most appropriate and modern methods for an optimal clean up and decontamination of Vieques. Ask them to immediately address the health crisis caused by the Navy in Vieques. Ask them to have th e federal agency known as the "Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry" (ATSDR) withdraw their discredited studies which absurdly alleged that there is no link between the toxins and chemicals used by the Navy and the health crisis among the people of Vieques. Please see the document below titled "Letter-writing Campaign to Help Resolve the Current Health Crisis in Vieques" and take action!

Thank you and...Stay tuned to our official blog for photos, videos, news and updates!

Letter-writing Campaign to Help Resolve the Current Health Crisis in Vieques
The people of Vieques suffer from a wide range of serious diseases due to heavy metal contamination of their island after over six decades of bombardment by the U.S. Navy with everything from depleted uranium to napalm. In 1999, residents of Vieques chose the Eaves Law Firm to represent their claims for compensation from the U.S. government. Since then, almost 8,000 victims of exposure to military toxics in Vieques have joined this lawsuit. Litigation is now pending in federal court in Puerto Rico.

In response to the litigation, the U.S. government - in representation of the U.S. Navy - has claimed "sovereign immunity", the antiquated defense that asserts "the king can do no wrong." We must demand that the Obama Justice Department abandon the use of this antiquated contrivance to thwart justice. We must demand that Viequenses be allowed their day in court.

We must also demand that the federal Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR) immediately retract its fatally flawed 2002-2003 reports that erroneously claimed that there is no connection between the heavy metal contamination and the illnesses and deaths suffered on Vieques. (The ATSDR is part of the Center for Disease Control or CDC). The ATSDR studies are the cornerstone of the government's case against compensating the victims. The Eaves Law Firm urges that all its clients and other residents contact the White House and Congress immediately to ask for action on the health crisis. Sample messages are below. Please send a copy of your letters to the Eaves Law Firm: Johnjr@eaveslaw. com
